Homes in Surf City

Surf City is the middle town on Topsail Island, and it's also one of the area's fastest-growing communities on the mainland side of the Intracoastal Waterway. Town limits reach into both Pender and Onslow counties. In 2018, a 65-foot fixed high-rise bridge replaced the 1955 swing bridge that had connected the island to the mainland for more than 60 years, and town leaders have pointed to steady growth as one reason the new bridge was needed.

That gives Surf City an unusual mix of homes: elevated beach houses and cottages on the island, many of them vacation rentals or second homes, soundside homes facing the marsh, and newer year-round neighborhoods on the mainland.

Storm history

Hurricane Florence hit Topsail Island hard in 2018. On North Shore Drive in northern Surf City, dunes ended up inside homes, and residents dug out sand piled four to five feet high. Walkways to nearly every oceanfront home were gone, and the Surf City Pier lost its last 150 feet. Across the island, homeowners found roof, siding and deck damage, and rain pushed through damaged roofs into ceilings and insulation.

Damage like that often keeps showing up for weeks. Wet insulation, soaked subfloors and moisture trapped behind siding can turn into mold long after the storm, especially in a home that sits closed up between rental weeks.

Frequently asked questions

Do you help on Topsail Island and the mainland?

Yes. Crews serve homes throughout Surf City, both on the island and on the mainland side of the bridge, as well as nearby parts of Pender and Onslow counties.

I own a vacation rental in Surf City. What should I do if a guest reports a leak?

Have the guest shut off the water at the main valve if they can find it, document the damage with photos, and get help out quickly. Drying needs to start within 24 to 48 hours to prevent mold. Check with your insurer about lost rental income coverage, if you have it.

Is my Surf City home in a flood zone?

Most of Topsail Island and many low-lying areas along the sound are in mapped flood zones, and some oceanfront areas are in higher-risk coastal zones. Look up your address on FEMA's Flood Map Service Center or the Pender or Onslow County GIS maps.

How fast can someone get to my home in Surf City?

Often the same day. Response times depend on your location, the time of day and conditions, and can be longer right after a major storm, especially if access to the island is limited.
