Homes in Southport

Southport's historic district, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, runs along the Cape Fear River waterfront and includes more than 160 historic buildings. More than half date from 1885 to 1905, and the district is considered one of the best examples of a Victorian coastal town in North Carolina. The oldest surviving house in town, the Walker-Pyke House, dates to the early 1800s.

Beyond the historic core, Southport and the surrounding area include mid-century homes, newer subdivisions and golf communities. Older homes typically sit over crawl spaces with wood floors and original trim; newer ones bring slabs, attic air handlers and tighter construction. All of them share the same salt air and storm exposure.

Repairs in the historic district

If your home is in Southport's historic district, check with the City of Southport before permanent exterior repairs, like replacing windows, siding, porches or roofing materials, since historic district rules may apply. Emergency steps to protect the home, like tarping a roof, come first. Inside, original plaster, original wood floors and trim can often be dried and cleaned rather than replaced, so ask any crew how they handle older materials.
