Homes in Sneads Ferry

Sneads Ferry is an unincorporated community in Onslow County, on the west side of the New River near where it meets the Intracoastal Waterway and the sound behind North Topsail Beach. It began as a fishing and shrimping community, and many older homes sit close to the water.

Growth has changed it quickly. The broader Sneads Ferry area grew from about 5,400 residents in 2000 to roughly 9,750 by 2014, driven largely by access to Camp Lejeune through the NC 172 gate and the expansion of Marine Corps commands nearby. Newer subdivisions now line the roads off NC 172 and NC 210, alongside older waterfront and rural properties.

Storm history

Hurricane Florence hit Sneads Ferry hard in 2018. Homes and businesses were badly damaged, roads washed out, trees came down, and flooding cut off some properties. One resident described her house as surrounded by water on all sides while she waited to be rescued, and the New River Marina was heavily damaged by flooding and wind. Onslow County as a whole recorded some of the heaviest rain in the state's history during that storm, with more than 30 inches near Swansboro.

Why being unincorporated matters

Because Sneads Ferry isn't an incorporated town, building permits and inspections for repairs go through Onslow County. If repairs after water or storm damage involve electrical, plumbing, HVAC or structural work, ask your contractor whether county permits are needed.
